There are two bike rental possibilities in Punta Gorda. Both Disha’s Bike Rental (#23 Main Street 722-2338) and Aba Iseni (“One love” in Garifuna) (North Street 622-7809) have great weekly and monthly rental offers. You can try to bargain for the price. There are only 2 internet café’s in P.G. Prices range from $3-4 BZ for the first 15 minutes, and $10-12 BZ for an hour.
V-Comp Technologies Internet Café (Main Street, 2nd floor, across from BTL office) This is the spot to go to if you are having computer troubles. They also have a DVD rental service. The Punta Gorda Hospital (Main Street, 722-2026/ 722-2161) provides good basic care. The hospital has a basic emergency room with doctor on-call 24/7. There is also a pharmacy on site.
Hillside Healthcare Centre (722-2312). About 5 miles outside PG is an American medical clinic, which provides primary health care, staffed by Belizean health care professionals, and US & UK medical residents. Opening hours: Monday and Wednesday 8:00–12:00, Tuesday 16:00–19:00, Patients can be picked up on Mondays and Wednesdays from the P.G. Central Park. All medications and services are free of charge. There is one pharmacy. Rosalma’s Pharmacy* (Main Street, right next to Mahung’s Grocery’s store 722-2444) and they sell a great variety of medicines and cosmetics. Post Office
Stamps can be bought at the Post Office (Front Street across Immigration/ Customs Department 722-2087) Here you can also send and receive parcels. Opening hours: Mon/ Fri 8:30-16:00. Cost of postage to any destination in Belize is $0.25 BZ; international rates are higher and very upon the type of mail being sent. Taxi’s can be recognised by their green license plate. When you call a taxi, you mostly will have one within 5 minutes. In town, prices are around $5-7 BZ. Always confirm the price with the driver to ensure that there is no confusion. Most places of business will call a taxi for you if you ask. Otherwise the hub for taxi service in P.G. is the Central Park.
Roots and Herbs Taxi and Tour Service (603-1304/ 722-2834) Pablo Bouchub is not only a taxi driver, but also gives tours to various sites and attractions. Galvez’s Taxi’s (722-2402) also provide a tours travel service. Tony’s Taxi Service (602-9524) can also be rented for day trips or longer even for small groups. Telephone
The country’s telephone system is operated by Belize Telemedia Ltd (BTL), formerly Belize Telecommunications Ltd.They have an office at Main Street. Here you can buy both regular and cellular phone cards. If you are bringing your international cell/ mobile phone, and will be staying for awhile, you can purchase a Belize SIM card for $50 BZ installed, plus applicable taxes. Opening hours: Mon/Fri 8:00-17:00, closed between 12:00-13:00. Besides BTL there are many shops and supermarkets that sell phone cards. 2 other stores cell SIM card packages (1) Raju’s Variety Store (Main Street, near BTL) and Mad Media Wireless (corner of Prince and Jose Maria Nunez Streets, 1 block west of the Central Park). There are numerous payphones in PG, and they can only be used with a phone card and do not accept coins.
If you are calling abroad the best rates are using the new 10-10-199 number, then the area code and local phone number of the person you would like to contact. This is the new discount international direct dial number. For the best rates to the USA, it is best to purchase the new USA Connect card in values of $5 BZ, $10 BZ, and $20 BZ. These cards can be purchased at BTL and some local shops. Please note that it is not possible to make collect calls to some countries and it is best to ask which countries will accept collect calls from Belize. The following countries will accept collect calls: USA, Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, France, Guatemala, Honduras, Guyana, Mexico, New Zealand, Nicaragua, United Kingdom, and most Caribbean Islands. P.G. has many shops. Most of them sell things like pots and pans, some clothing, slippers / shoes, hammocks and basic personal hygiene items. Some shops sell handmade arts and crafts too. The shops are open from around 8:00 to 17:00, some are closed during lunch: 12:00-14:00.
Fajina Craft Centre (Front Street) sells local Mayan handicrafts such as jipijapa baskets, slate carvings and embroidered shirts, dresses and wall hangings. They are open during market hours (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 7:00 to 11:00) and it is located next to the Post Office. Market
Saturday is the main market day. Villagers come to town to buy and sell their products. This is the best opportunity to purchase fresh local fruits and vegetables. There is a smaller market on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It is a fascinating and colourful mix-up. The market hours are between 6:00 and 12:00.
Tienda La Indita Maya (#26 Middle Main Street, across the Fire Station) sells not only clothes and shoes, but also has beautiful wooden crafts like bowls and napkin rings, jewellery and bags. Tourist Visitor CentreThe visitor centre shares their office with Toledo Ecotourism Association and the Toledo Cacao Festival. The visitor centre has a lot of information on PG and the surrounding area. The centre is operated by the Toledo Branch of the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA). The office is staffed by Kimberley Williams, who is extremely knowledgeable about tourism activities, transportation schedules, and directions in both PG and the Toledo District. The James Bus Line (702-2049/ 722-2625)offers both an express and regular service from Punta Gorda to Belize City return, with scheduled stops in Mango Creek/ Independence, Dangriga, Belmopan and Belize City. One express bus is offered daily at 6:00, departing from the James Bus Line terminal across from the Police Station on King Street. Express service departs Belize City at 15:30 sharp and usually arrives in Punta Gorda minutes to 20:00 Watertaxi
P.G. has a Watertaxi service to Puerto Barrios, Guatemala and beyond.
Requena’s Charter Service* (#12 Front Street 722-2070) offers boat trips to Puerto Barrios Guatemala; A ticket costs $35 BZ for a one way; $70 BZ return. Tickets can be purchased outside the Immigration and Customs Office on Front Street, one hour prior to departure. Pichilingo/ El Chato (722-2870 Belize/ 502-79485525 Guatemala) based in Puerto Barrios offers daily watertaxi service to Punta Gorda and Puerto Barrios. A ticket cost $40 BZ one way and $80 BZ. Every Tuesday and Friday Rigoberto James leaves with his boat from Punta Gorda main wharf directly to Livingston, Guatemala. Cost for a one way ticket is $35 BZ. Air Travel Punta Gorda has daily service from Maya Island Air (722-2856, www.mayaairways.com) and
Tropic Air* (722-2008, www.tropicair.com). The ticket offices are located at the town airstrip. From P.G. you can fly to all major destinations in Belize and the Philp SW Goldson International Airport. All flights stop in Placencia, Dangriga and Belize City Municipal Airport. San Miguel, Medina Bank and San Antonio buses go every day (except Sundays). Other buses only go on the market days;Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
P.G. to Medina Bank includes times from the James Buses. Buses leave P.G. from the Central Park (near the Belize Bank and the big town clock). Times can always change, so carefully check the time before you leave.
